Roger D. Whitcome, 84, of Grundy Center, Iowa, died March 20, 2014, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 24, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2014, at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. A Masonic Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. conducted by Emerald Lodge #334 of Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley, Grundy Center or to the family.

Roger Dale was born in Columbus, Ohio, on September 27, 1929, the son of Ellsworth and Alice (Anderson) Whitcome. He graduated from Manchester High School in 1948. After graduation he attended and graduated from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Roger received his Master of Arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado. He served his country from 1952 – 1953 in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Roger married Lola Bartlett on August 1, 1954, at the Methodist Church in McIntire, Iowa. Roger taught school in the Inwood, Iowa School System for four years, he then taught four years in Postville before joining the Grundy Center School System where he was Elementary Principal for 30 years. He also served as interim principal for Timothy Christian School. He coached basketball and baseball and was also driver's training and firearms safety instructor.

Roger was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church, Grundy Center, where he served as a trustee. He also served on the Grundy County Conservation Board and the Grundy Center Planning and Zoning Board. Roger was a member of the Kiwanis and Masonic Lodge in Grundy Center. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, the Iowa Hawkeyes and Waverly- Shell Rock sports especially wrestling, baseball and football. Most of all Roger enjoyed spending time with family and friends especially his grandchildren.

Roger is survived by his wife Lola of Grundy Center; son Scott Whitcome, of Waverly, IA; son Michael Whitcome and wife, Teresa, of Mantorville, MN; brother Charles Whitcome of Arkansas, grandchildren: Eric (Amber) Whitcome, Clint(Stephanie) both of Waverly and Autumn (Evan) Timm of Rochester, MN; great-grandchildren; Lincoln, Everlee, Weston, Kinley Whitcome, Everett Timm and Kaylee Luhman.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents and sister Ruth Zamora and daughter-in-law Laurel Whitcome.
