Paula Margaret Sells, 97, of Grundy Center, died on August 21, 2014 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit. She was born in rural Grundy County on September 28, 1916 to Peter and Marie (Christensen) Christiansen.

Paula graduated from Dike High School, and shortly thereafter, married Louie Sells on October 20, 1934 in Crookston, Minnesota. She transitioned from housewife and mother to becoming a farmer's wife in 1947. Paula loved raising her laying hens, and at one point had over 800 of them! She enjoyed welcoming everyone who came to get eggs, and always had a cup of coffee, cookies and a friendly conversation ready for her guests. Children visiting the farm loved playing with their big, red dog.

Paula's family remembers her as an excellent cook, with the keen ability to cook or bake most anything without a recipe. Some of her specialties include her Swedish Meatballs, fried chicken, and her many varieties of cakes and cookies. Paula also found time to tend to her vegetable and flower gardens; with her green thumb she became a miracle grower, often taking on the challenge of dying plants just to revive them. She was an expert canner, using the bounty of her apple tree to make the best homemade applesauce in town. Paula loved company and was an exceptional conversationalist on a wide variety of topics. She had a way of always making people feel comfortable, loved, and special. Her kind heart always put others above herself, making sure her family was taken care of first.

Left to cherish memories of Paula are her son, Paul (Carol) Sells; grandchildren, Tiffany Gabbard, and Pamela Sullivan; great-grandson Erik; great-great-grandaughter Kyra. Paula was preceded in death by her parents, husband Louie, daughters Shirley and Linda, and grandson David.

Services will be held at 1:30 pm, Tuesday, August 26, 2014, at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, 509 4th St, Grundy Center. Family will greet guests one hour prior to services. Burial will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
