Lutjen G. Beenken, 79, of Grundy Center, Iowa, died Saturday, September 20, 2014, at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer, IA. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center, Pastor Luther Thoresen officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center, Iowa. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 23, 2014, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Lutjen "Sonny", the son of Herman and Ubena (Rosevink) Beenken was born June 23, 1935 in Grundy Center, Iowa. He grew up in Grundy County and attended school in Grundy Center. Sonny started farming early in life and farmed all his adult life.
Sonny married Valoria Thoren on September 22, 1954. Valoria died on February 12, 1955. On February 26, 1956 Sonny married Darlene Thoren. Darlene died June 5, 1978. On June 15, 1979, Sonny was united in marriage to Beverly Pollock Hansen. The couple lived in Grundy County on the family farm till moving to Grundy Center in 2011. They wintered in Florida for the last 10 winters. Sonny was a devoted husband and father. He was a lifelong member of American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center. Sonny enjoyed restoring tractors especially IH, Nascar racing especially Dale Earnhardt, camping, country music, tractor pulls, farm sales, and tractor rides. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Beverly of Grundy Center, daughter, Deb and her husband Dicky Oltman of Grundy Center; son, Delbert and his wife Robyn Beenken of Grundy Center; stepchildren, Alan Hansen and his wife Valarie of Holland, Rick Hansen of Wheatland, CO, Debra Kennedy and her husband John of Parrish, FL , Denise Graves and her husband Scott of Holland; four grandchildren; thirteen step-grandchildren; four great grandchildren; ten step- great grandchildren; sister, Johanna Garrett of Grundy Center; mother-in-law, Naomi Pollock of Cedar falls; sisters-in-law, Harriett ( John) Muller, Dorothy Beenken both of Grundy Center, Alberta(Warren) Hanneman and Audrey (Perry) Wolfenspergen, Linda Mounce all of Cedar Falls, Sharon(Mac) McCampbell of Mesa, AZ; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lutjen was preceded in death by his parents; his first and second wives; three sisters, Liz (Julius) Zeck, Jennie (Benjamin) Van Deest, Grace (Alvin) Harrenstein; two brothers, Herman(Alice) Beenken, Jake Beenken; one step-great grandson; brother-in-law Robert Mounce.
