Anton Ludwig Neessen was born at Loggabernum, Ostfriesland, Germany, January 28, 1846. During the year 1859 he came to America and settled in Stevenson county, Illinois, where he was united in marriage to Miss Hauke Schafer in 1868. They came to Iowa in 1870 and settled on a farm in Colfax township, Grundy county, where the family now reside. On August 17, 1900, Mr. Neessen fell from a wagon and was severely injured, resulting in paralysis, which caused his death Friday, Sept. 14, 1900.

Funeral services were held at the Drake church Monday, Sept. 17, and a large concourse of friends were in attendance to pay their last respects to the deceased who was a man honored by all who made his acquaintance. The widow and five children mourn the early demise of a kind and loving father and beside these the following relatives from a distance were present at the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. H. Schaffer of Monroe, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Meyer of Pomeroy, Iowa; Mrs. Anna Boyd and Miss Boyd of Ackley; Mr. Wm. Boyd of Conrad; Mr. Walter Boyd of Oelwein; Rev. and Mrs. Daniel Schaffer of Pleasant Valley; Rev. and Mrs. Fred Schaffer of Aplington; Rev. and Mrs. John Schaffer of Oregon, Ill. and Mr. C. A. Schaffer and family of Grundy Center.

Mrs. Neessen and family feel very grateful to the friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted them during Mr. Neessen's illness and burial.
