Henry H. Smit Dies Suddenly At Home

Henry H. Smit died suddenly at noon last Saturday at his home in Grundy Center. Death came very suddenly following a heart attack. He had been in fair health up to the time he was stricken. He was 72 years old.

The body was taken to the Engelkes funeral home where arrangements were made. The casket was taken to Colfax Center Presbyterian church Thursday forenoon where it will be open before the service. The service will be conducted by Rev. Gene Straatmeyer at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in the Grundy Center cemetery.

Mr. Smit was born on a farm in Colfax township October 23rd, 1892. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Smit. He grew up on a Colfax township farm.

On September 21, 1917, Henry Smit and Grace Meyer were married. The couple resided on Colfax township farm until 15 years ago when they retired from the farm and moved to Grundy Center.

Surviving are the wife and four children, two sons and two daughters. The daughters are Dorothy, who is at home, and Mrs. Wm. Schmidt, Vinton. The sons are Wilbur, Grundy Center, and Darris, who is in the U.S. Army and has been serving in Korea. When he received word of his father's death, he applied for leave to return home and within a very brief time the leave was granted and he started by plane for his home. He landed at San Francisco and took another plane from there and was in Des Moines by 9 o'clock on Tuesday. The more than 8000 miles was covered by plane in 18 hours.

Other survivors are four grandchildren; two brothers, Will, of Grundy Center, and George A., Holland. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
