Mrs. Willoughby Dies Thurs. At Grundy Hospital

Mrs. H. A. Willoughby, who had been a resident of Grundy Center 50 years, died last Thursday in the Grundy Memorial hospital. She had been in failing health the past few years. She was 81 years old.

The body was taken to the Ferree funeral home where funeral arrangements were made. Services were held in the First Baptist church in Grundy Center Sunday afternoon. The resident pastor, Rev. Calvin Rumley, officiated at the service. Burial was by the side of her husband in the Grundy Center cemetery. Her husband died June 7, 1952.

Mrs. Willoughby was a native of Tama county. She was born at Montour, March 3, 1883, and she grew up there. Her maiden name was Clara Krause. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Krause. She was one of 18 children in the Krause family, only two of whom are still living. She was a graduate of the academy at Garwin, and later of the State Normal school, Cedar Falls. She had prepared herself to become a teacher. She was employed as a teacher in the Grundy Center school for two years, during which time she became acquainted with her future husband.

On June 12, 1907, Clara Krause and Hugh A. Willoughby were married. They established their home in Grundy Center and resided here during all of their married life.

For many years Mrs. Willoughby took an active part in social, church and civic activities in Grundy Center.

Surviving are two sons, Bliss K., Grundy Center and Robert H., Oberlin, O.; two daughters, Mrs. Eldon C. (Frances) Smoldt, Grundy Center and Mrs. Robert (Jean) Gesell, Brussels, Belgium; 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ernest Krause, Garwin, and Bernhart Krause, Windsor, Vermont.
