Funeral Saturday For Nettie Smit
Memorial services were held Friday afternoon, June 2, 1972 for Nettie Smit, 81, Grundy Center, at the Bethany Presbyterian Church. She died Wednesday morning, May 31 at the Grundy Co. Memorial Hospital. She had been in the hospital since May 27, having been taken there from the Storey Custodial Home where she had resided nearly three years.
Rev. Calvin Vanderwerf officiated at the service. Mrs. Raymond Appel provided organ music and accompanied the vocal soloist, Mrs. E. D. Halstead. Casketbearers were Charles Ware, C. A. Janssen, Bernard A. Engelkes, Carl Rhoads, C. E. Engelkes and Virgil Abels. Burial was in the Colfax Center Presbyterian cemetery.
She was born March 22, 1891 in Colfax township, Grundy Co., Iowa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Smit. She lived on the farm in Colfax township and attended the rural schools. In 1922 she moved to Grundy Center with her parents. For several years Miss Smit was employed by the telephone office in Grundy, then assisted Mrs. Ethel Courtney in her nursing home. She served as a maid in several local homes until recent years. She was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian church, taught Sunday school many years, and was an honorary member of the UPW.
Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Henry Henrichs of Grundy Center, and one brother, Henry J. Smit of Dike. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and one infant sister. The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
