Bertha Meents, Age 88, Dead

Mrs. Bertha Meents, age 88, passed away at 11:50 p.m. Friday evening, May 28, 1982, at the Acute Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital. She had been a patient there for nine days.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 1, 1982, at Colfax Center Church, rural Holland. Rev. Jerry VanCurler officiated the service.

Mrs. Tom Simms sang "My God and I" and "How Great Thou Art." She was accompanied by Mrs. Raymond Hinders who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

Casket bearers were Bernard M. Engelkes, Glen Hockemeyer, Kenneth Eilers, Bernard Kruger, Joseph Junker and Arnold Tjepkes. Harry Ascher and Matthew Loger served as ushers. Mrs. Joseph Junker and Mrs. Jacob Abels were in charge of the floral arrangements.

Burial was in Colfax Center Church Cemetery, rural Holland. Relatives and friends were invited to return to the church following the committal service for a period of Christian fellowship and refreshment.

Mrs. Meents was born on August 9, 1893 northeast of Fern in Beaver Township, Grundy County, IA, the daughter of John and Hilka Roelfs Goldhorn. She attained the age of 88 years, nine months and 19 days. She grew up around Fern. On October 16, 1912 at Pleasant Valley Reformed Church parsonage she was united in marriage to Uffa John Meents and after their marriage they farmed in Colfax township on the same farm on which he was born. He passed away November 18, 1968. After his death she continued to live on the same farm. She lived there for 70 years.

She was a long time member of Colfax Center Church and active in the church affairs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one infant son, Andrew, one brother and one sister.

She is survived by three sons, John, Paul and Alvin of Rt. 1, Holland; two daughters, Mrs. IvaDean Dieken of Rt. 1, Holland, and Mrs. John (ClaraDean) Claassen of rural Parkersburg; one sister, Mrs. Dena Conradi of Beverly Manor Convalescent Center, Grundy Center; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
