Services Held Monday For Henry J. Smit

Henry J. Smit passed away at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 17 at the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.

Funeral services were held at the Bethany Presbyterian Church, Grundy Center, on Monday, May 21 at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Calvin W. Vanderwerf officiated.

Mrs. Arlan Schaap sang "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" and "I Won't Have To Cross Jordan Alone." She was accompanied by Mrs. T. J. Heronimus, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

The casket bearers were Donald Smit Jr., Damon Smit, David Smit, Leslie Smit, Eugene Engelkes, Darwin Engelkes, Frank Yackey and Sidney Slifer.

The ushers were Lloyd Dreesman and Harold Henricks. Mrs. Bernard Eilderts and Mrs. Vernon Klosterboer were in charge of the floral arrangements.

Interment was in the Colfax Center Cemetery, rural Holland.

Relatives and friends were invited to return to the church following the committal service for a period of Christian fellowship and refreshment.

Mr. Smit was born May 3, 1899, on a farm in Colfax township, Grundy County. He attained the age of 85 years and 14 days. He was born the son of John R. and Meikelina Vander Heide Smit and grew up on the family farm in Colfax township.

On June 29, 1921, he was united in marriage to Florence Maas. After their marriage they farmed in Colfax township. She passed away on November 19, 1963.

He then moved and lived in Wellsburg for one year. On December 19, 1964 he was united in marriage to Helen Uschkrat Alberts and they lived in Dike. On January 28, 1969 she passed away.

In the early 1970s he moved and made his home in Grundy Center. In July of 1981, he became a resident of the Long Term Care Unit.

He was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first and second wives, one son, Alvin, six sisters and two infant sisters.

He is survived by one son, Donald Smit of Sparks, NV; one daughter, Mrs. Bernard A. (Marian) Engelkes of rural Holland; and by 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established. The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home of Grundy Center was in charge of arrangements.
