Viola H. Smith Hoffman, 99, died Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center.
She was born December 14, 1910 near Aplington, the daughter of John and Minnie (Pruisner) Brandt. She married James Smith on February 23, 1931. They farmed near Buck Grove and Aplington. In 1946 she became a pilot and was one of the first flying farmers' wives in Iowa. Their marriage ended in divorce. She worked at Hinson Mfg for twelve years. In 1964 she married Leonard Hoffman till 1985.
Survived by: two sons, Elmer (Ana) of Tampa, FL and Parkersburg, and Kenneth (Donis) of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren: Roxanne (Don) Botic, Kimberly (Jeff) Thompson, and Scott (Carol) Smith; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Mildred Lyons; a sister-in-law, Grace Brandt; four step children; and several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette, and a brother, John Brandt; and a grandson, David Smith.
Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Richardson Funeral Home with burial in Buck Grove Cemetery, Buck Grove. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and for one hour prior to services Saturday.
