Fred Harberts, 81, Grundy Man, Dies Saturday

Fred Harberts, 81, died unexpectedly Saturday evening of a heart attack at the home of his son, Alfred, in Waterloo, where he and his wife were spending the day.

Services are set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Gene Straatmeyer will officiate. The body will be taken to the church at noon Tuesday from Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home.

He was born Feb. 22, 1887, in Grundy County, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Harberts. He attended the Dubuque Academy in Dubuque for one and a half years. He was married to Lena Casjens Jan. 28, 1913, in Lyon County.

After farming for three years in South Dakota, they moved to a farm north of Grundy Center and later farmed west of town, before retiring and moving to Grundy Center in 1942. He worked for several years with the Grundy County ASCS, with a bin crew.

Survivors are his widow; five daughters, Mrs. Samuel (Delia) Rust, Mrs. Arthur (Cora) Slifer and Mrs. Harry (Ruth) Ascher, all of Grundy Center, Mrs. Harold (Isabelle) Eiklenborg, Dike, and Miss Carolyn Harberts, Allerton; five sons, Charles of Dike, the Rev. Dick Harberts of Postville, Russell of Hudson, Floyd, at home, and Alfred of Waterloo; 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one brother, the Rev. William Harberts, Berkeley, Calif. He was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters and one grandchild.
