Rites Held For John E. Abels

John E. Abels, of rural Holland, passed away at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, January 1, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, in Grundy Center, where he had been a patient since November 18, 1986.

Funeral services were held at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, rural Holland, on Saturday, January 3, at 2 p.m. Pastor Arthur Ames officiated.

Mrs. Tom Simms sang "How Great Thou Art," and Mr. and Mrs. Simms sang "My God and I." They were accompanied by Mrs. Larry Stahl, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

The casket bearers were Irwin Abels, Virgil Abels, Bob Abels, Fred Abels, Tom Verdoorn, David Verdoorn and Harold Verdoorn.

The ushers were Herman Akkerman and John Seehusen. Mrs. Gene Venenga and Mrs. George W. Schmidt were in charge of the floral arrangements.

The committal services were held immediately following the funeral service.

Relatives and friends were invited to remain at the church following the services for a period of Christian fellowship and refreshments.

Interment was in the Colfax Church Cemetery, rural Holland.

Mr. Abels was born on May 7, 1904, in Colfax township, Grundy county, on the Abels family farm, the son of Barney and Annie Kruse Abels. He attained the age of 82 years, seven months and 24 days.

He grew up in Colfax township and attended Colfax #8 country school. He lived in Colfax township all his life and farmed until he retired in the early 1970's.

He was a life long member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Henrietta Franken of Holland, and by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Engelkes-Abels funeral Home of Grundy Center was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
