Vallera Minnich, Age 90, Dies

Mrs. Vallera F. Minnich of Grundy Center passed away at 10:42 a.m. Friday, March 28, at the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center, on Monday, March 31, at 10:30 a.m. Rev. D. Ward Young officiated.

Mrs. Robert Schultz sang "In The Garden." She was accompanied by Mrs. Jack Stumberg, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

The casket bearers were Carroll Haren, Keith Shirk, Naaman Haaren, LeRoy Claassen, Orville Stover and Lyle Doak.

Mrs. William Sievert and Mrs. Roger Peters were in charge of the floral arrangements.

Burial was in the Alice Church Cemetery, rural Conrad.

Relatives and friends were invited to the Lee and Evelyn Minnich home following the committal services for a period of Christian fellowship and refreshments.

Mrs. Minnich was born on October 10, 1895, in Melrose township, the daughter of Edgar C. and Clara Elizabeth Kline Allen. She attained the age of 90 years, five months and 18 days.

After completing her formal education in the Grundy county schools, she attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, studying music. She returned to Melrose township, where she gave piano lessons.

She was united in marriage to Loren M. Minnich on December 12, 1917, at her parents' home. They farmed in the Dows area for two years before returning to Melrose township, where they resided until her husband's death on December 26, 1926.

Mrs. Minnich then moved to Grundy Center with her two sons, Lee and Laverne. She was employed by the Marshalltown Canning Company and later established a rooming house in her grandfather's home.

She was active in various organizations until her health failed. She was a member of the Methodist Church, Winmore Class, W.S.C.S., Sunset Rebekah Lodge, American Legion Auxiliary, Gold Star Mothers of the American Legion, Women's Club, and the Women's Relief Corps.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Laverne, and a sister, Faye Stover.

She is survived by a son, Lee Minnich of Grundy Center; a granddaughter, Mrs. Robert (Jennifer) Schultz of Waterloo; a sister, Birdine Shirk of Grundy Center; and a brother, Dolan Allen of Sarasota, FL.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center, was in charge of the arrangements.
