VANHEIDEN, ABBAS, BUNK, DEVRIES

Alice VanHeiden, 80, of Wellsburg, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 20, 2002, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit, Grundy Center, Iowa, of natural causes.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 23, 2002, at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Kent Leydens officiating. Burial was in the Ackley Christian Reformed Church Cemetery in rural Ackley, Iowa.

Alice was born on July 18, 1921, in Butler County near Ackley, the daughter of Bert and Gertie (Bunk) Abbas. She attended grade school in Austinville and graduated from Ackley High School in 1939. Alice married Benjamin DeVries and then later divorced. On February 17, 1949, she was united in marriage to Ben VanHeiden at the Reformed Church parsonage in Bristow, Iowa. Ben passed away on February 18, 1995 in Allison, Iowa. Alice was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center.

Survivors include her ten children: Jeanette Merrill of Allison, Lavern VanHeiden and his wife Beverly of Wellsburg, Jerry DeVries of Reinbeck, Benjamin J. DeVries and his wife Judy of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jerald VanHeiden and his wife Connie of Kinsman, Illinois, Richard VanHeiden and his wife Victoria of Steamboat Rock, Merna Lovell and her husband Larry of Waverly, David VanHeiden and his wife Dianne of Hudson, Laurie Diehm and her husband Don of Reinbeck, and Kenneth VanHeiden and his wife Barbara of Cedar Falls; thirty grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters: Remda Geerdes of Ankeny, Iowa, Bertha Bishop of Denver, Iowa and Henrietta Johnson of Aplington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ben VanHeiden, a son Gary Lee in infancy, three brothers: Arend, Fred, and George Abbas, and a sister: Lucille Plutschaun.

Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of arrangements.
