Mrs. Sam Ross Dies At Hospital, Rites Held Here Tuesday

Funeral services for Mrs. Sam Ross of Wellsburg were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Doyen Funeral Home and at 1:30 p.m. at the Second Christian Reformed Church, with Rev. Kasjen Tebbens officiating.

Burial was in the Shiloh township cemetery.

Special music for the service was provided by vocalists Mrs. Harold Okones and Dick Claassen, while Mrs. Clarence Beecroft was organist and Mrs. Ray Toomsen, pianist.

Casket bearers were Johannes Meester, Homer Ross, LuVerne Ross, Donald Huisman, Wallace Getting and Troy Anderson.

Mrs. Ross passed away at 8:15 p.m., Saturday at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center following a lingering illness. She had been taken to the hospital on August 15th for treatment. She reached the age of 73 years, 2 months and 1 day.

Mrs. Ross, the former Gertrude Dena Getting, was born on a farm in Shiloh Township, northeast of Wellsburg, on June 18, 1894, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Getting (nee Gristje Snittjer). At an early age she and her family moved to South Dakota. She attended the rural schools in South Dakota.

She was united in marriage to Sam Ross on Feb. 24, 1915. Following their marriage they lived in Wellsburg, later moving to a farm near Kanawha. They then lived on several farms in the Wellsburg area, and in 1933 moved to Wellsburg where they continued to make their home.

She was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church. She was active in the Willing Workers Society, was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Amvets Auxiliary as long as her health permitted.

Those who preceded her in death were her parents, 1 brother Sammy Getting, 1 sister, Minnie, Mrs. Jerry Peters, and 1 son, Simon Sherwood Ross in infancy.

She is survived by her husband, Sam Ross, 1 daughter (Yvonne), Mrs. Herman Sietsema of Wellsburg, 2 sons, Donald Ross of Wellsburg, Delbert Ross of Wellsburg, 8 grandchildren, 1 brother, Fred W. Getting of Grundy Center and a host of other relatives and friends.
