First White Born In Grundy County Dies In Kansas

George Walker was Veteran of Civil War; Widow and Son Survive

Grundy Center, Ia.--George Walker, one of three surviving Civil war soldiers of this community, died Wednesday at the home of a son, Charles, in Pittsburg, Kan. He was 80 years old and had been an invalid since last fall, when an infection caused amputation of a leg.

Mr. Walker was a member of a pioneer family of Grundy county and, according to tradition, was the first white child born within what now is the county. He had resided in this city from the early sixties until his removal with his wife several months ago to son's home, the change being necessary because of his invalidism. He had been blind the last two years.

Surviving are the widow, formerly Helen Wass of this place, and the son.

It is not believed the body will be brought here.

Mr. Walker was born on Dec. 25, 1849.
