L. Berends Dies at Marshalltown Hospital Saturday
L. Berends died at the Deaconess hospital at Marshalltown last Saturday afternoon of the shock following the operation to which he submitted Saturday morning. Mr. Berends had been suffering from an intestinal cancer for much of the past year and he had been in failing health during all of that time. A few weeks before his death he appeared to be getting better, but a week ago his condition took a change for the worse and from that time on there was little hopes that he could long survive. His remains were brought to his home here Saturday evening.
Funeral services were held from the home at one o'clock yesterday afternoon and later at Drake's church with Rev. Drake officiating.
Mr. Berends was 67 years old. He came to this country when he was a young man and for many years he and his family resided on a Colfax township farm. Mr. and Mrs. Berends came to Holland about ten years ago and they lived here continually up to the time of his death.
Surviving relatives are the wife, one son, William, living near Cleves and two daughters, Mrs. O. Olthoff, and Mrs. Otto Paterni. There is one adopted son, Peter Elders from Cedar Rapids, and Elzo from this county. Mrs. John Niehouse from Grundy Center is the only surviving sister.
