A fatal accident occurred last Sunday afternoon at the farm of Charley Bailey, three miles north of town. His son, Guy, fourteen years old, and Cornelius Blockzeil, fifteen years of age, who was employed on the farm, were fooling with a gun when the weapon was accidentally discharged by the former lad shooting the Blockzeil boy in the bowels. The gun had failed to work and both the boys were leaning over it endeavoring to remedy the trouble and no blame is attached to the Baily boy any more than that of carelessness. The victim was taken to the house and Drs. Heffelfinger and Sibert were immediately called and rendered what assistance they could to alleviate the boy's sufferings but pronounced the accident a fatal one and on Tuesday morning he died. The ball had entered near the navel and Dr. Heffelfinger thinks it lodged in the spine. The funeral was conducted from the VanderLas church and he was buried in the church cemetery yesterday, July 15th. His parents live in Washington township and have the sympathy of the community in their sad loss.
