After a year and eight months of suffering, Mrs. Mary VanderLas passed triumphantly from the scenes of this life to her happy home and reward in heaven at 3 o'clock Monday morning, April 16th. Mrs. VanderLas was born in East Friesland, Germany, January 28, 1834, her maiden name being Mary Jacobs. In 1853, together with her father and brothers, she emigrated to this country and settled on a farm in Ogle county, Ill. On January 21st, 1855, she became the wife of Rev. John VanderLas, with whom she spent 39 years of active and useful labor in the Master's vineyard. In the fall of 1870 Rev. VanderLas accepted a call from the East Friesland Presbyterian church in Grundy county, whither he and his family moved in November and where they resided 16 years. Since the fall of '86 they have been residents of Ackley. She leaves an aged husband and four children, Rev. R. A., Cedar Rapids; B. F., formerly of Grundy Center but now of Schaller; Mrs. F. Hayenga and Mrs. Ben. Folkers of this place to mourn her loss. Surely, dear mother, "thou shalt be missed because thy seat will be empty."

--The Grundy County Republican (Grundy Center, Iowa), 26 April 1894
