Matie C. Walker, eighth child of Mr. and Mrs. James Walker, was born Dec. 28th, 1869 in Grundy county, Iowa, and passed from this earth January 2nd, 1930, aged 60 years and 4 days.
On Oct. 18, 1888 she was united in marriage to Stephen Sayer. To this union were born three children, Ethel, (Mrs. W. G. Leslie) and Miles Walker Sayer, of Eldora, and Charles Ernest, who passed away in early childhood.
Mr. and Mrs. Sayer moved to Eldora thirty-two years ago and have made their home here during these years. In early life she united with the Methodist church and continued a faithful member until death. She has been an active member of the Rebekah lodge for over thirty years. Her illness was rather brief but intense.
Left to mourn her departure besides her husband, daughter and son are one granddaughter, Maxine Sayer; four sisters, Mrs. Ida Modlin, of Eldora; Mrs. Anna Gohring, Iowa Falls; Mrs. Bertha Holmes, Calgary, Alberta Canada; Mrs. Frank Furman, Granger, Ia.,; and three brothers, L. W. Walker, Harris, Ia.; G. Y. Walker, Des Moines, Ia.; and Frank Walker, Omaha.
Mrs. Sayer will be remembered for many kindly deeds. There are many in Eldora who have told us that when death came into the home that Mrs. Sayer was the first one to come and the last one to leave, busying herself with the many necessary duties that such an occasion demands. No task too arduous for her and she will be gratefully remembered for it. She loved to be of service.
She was a faithful attendant at Sunday school and church and did her full share in the fraternal orders to which she belonged.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon and were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. W. H. Mitchell. Burial was made in the Eldora cemetery, where the members of the Rebekah lodge had charge of the services.
