Thresa Marie Essig, 86, Valley View Nursing Center, died there on Thursday, March 18, of natural causes.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eldora. The Rev. James Key will officiate. Burial will be in the Melrose Cemetery in Grundy County.
Visitation will be Friday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church.
She was born Feb. 4, 1906, in Hoehne, Colo., to David and Ella Byrd Ernest. She was raised in that area and attended schools there. She received her teachers certificate from the Colorado Teachers College in Greeley. She married John Essig on Dec. 22, 1927, in Hoehne, and they moved to a farm in Iowa in 1929. After farming, the couple served as house parents at Quakerdale near New Providence, Lutheran Childrens Home in Ames and the YMCA Boys Home in Des Moines.
She was a long-time member of the Ivester Church of the Brethren before moving to Eldora. She has been a member of the United Methodist Church, D. A. R., Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, M. O. H. Club at Ivester, 4-H, and Farm Bureau.
Survivers include her son, John, Webster City; a daughter, Roberta (Mrs. Richard) Ford, Urbana, Ill.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, in 1982; a daughter, Emily Mae; and a grandson.
