Alfred J. Albers, 66, of Wellsburg, Iowa, died Monday, September 8, 2008, at his home in Wellsburg, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Thursday, September 11, 2008, at Faith Presbyterian Church, rural Ackley, Iowa, with Pastor Allen McClure officiating. Burial will follow at East Friesland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, rural Ackley, Iowa, with full military rites provided by the Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 91 and the American Legion Post No. 213. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 10, 2008, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg. A memorial fund has been established.

Alfred James Albers was born February 11, 1942, at home on his parent’s farm in rural Grundy County, Iowa, the son of Fritz and Alice (Franken) Albers. He attended elementary school at German Township #7 and graduated from Wellsburg High School with the class of 1960. Alfred was inducted into the National Guard on June 11, 1960 and was honorably discharged on January 1, 1966. On July 22, 1961, he was united in marriage to Mardean A. Hook at East Friesland Presbyterian Church. They were later divorced. On June 21, 1975, Alfred was united in marriage to Susan A. Samuels at the Methodist Church in Waverly, Iowa. Alfred was a lifelong farmer who also worked as a carpenter, sold investments for Ozark National Life Insurance Company, and recently, drove truck for Ruan Transport in Cedar Falls.

Alfred was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church, rural Ackley, where he had served as a Deacon. Alfred was a member of the Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 91. He had served as the German Township Director for Farm Bureau. Alfred loved to hunt and fish, and especially enjoyed times spent trapshooting. He also enjoyed square-dancing. Alfred never knew a stranger. He would always take the time to speak to everyone.

He is survived by his wife Susan Albers of Wellsburg, Iowa; two sons, James Albers and his wife Diane of Wellsburg, Iowa; Mike Albers and his wife Sandee of Dike, Iowa; three daughters, Rhonda Myers and her husband Mike of Dike, Iowa; Tiffany Lichty-Gaffey and her husband Greg Gaffey of Ames, Iowa; Michelle Mensing and her husband Scott of Smithville, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Amber Albers, Coty Albers, Shawn Albers, Jordan Myers, Braxton Myers, Trenton Myers, Brooke Myers, and Caleb Lichty; one great-grandchild, Krayton Rutledge; two brothers, Donald Albers and his wife Connie of Conroe, Texas; Robert Albers and his wife Jeanine of Georgetown, Texas; one sister, Elaine Maifeld and her husband Russell of Galesburg, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fritz and Alice Albers; one daughter-in-law, Kimberly Albers, and one son-in-law, Matt Lichty.
