John August Fred Ruthenberg was born October 15, 1831 in , Province Brandenberg, Germany. He was united in holy wedlock with his now sorely bereaved and deeply sorrowing wife, Wilhelmine Raths, Sept. 23, 1857, immediately emigrating with his bride to America. For nearly nine years they made their home near Albany, N. Y. In 1866 he came to Cedar Falls and lived in the city for two years, then he moved upon a farm 9 miles west of the city in Grundy county, first as a tenant and later becoming the owner of the farm. About four years ago he again moved with his wife and daughter Lottie to the city to spend the remaining years of his life. He had been failing in health for some time and especially so this winter but was able to be up and around until a few days before his death which occurred at his home 1410 Clay street, Feb. 24 at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 9 days.
He leaves to mourn his departure, the sorrowing wife with whom he lived in happy union, sharing the joys and sorrows of life for 47 years two sons and two daughters. They are Herman of Grundy county, Henry of Campbell, Minn., Mrs. Lona Pfeiffer living west of town and Miss Lottie of Cedar Falls.
Mr. Ruthenberg was led to Christ and became a Christian about 43 years ago when living near Albany, and united with the Evangelical association and remained faithful to God and the church until death.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Evangelical church conducted by Rev. Knoche. Interment in Fairfield township.
