John Bode Janssen

Friday morning the community near Wellsburg was shocked when it learned of the sudden demise of Mr. John Bode Janssen, a prominent member of that community. Mr. Janssen put in a hard day's work Thursday. He and his family spent Thursday evening at the home of his son William. Nothing was noticed of any indisposition, until about three o'clock Friday morning, when he called for help. He had gotten up unnoticed and gone outside, when according to all indication he was overtaken by some sudden illness, perhaps apoplexy. He was able to arouse his family and every possible attention was given him. When found he was still conscious and able to give few instructions. It soon became apparent that his end was approaching and his children were called to his bedside, but death came so unexpectedly that only his widow and some of the children could be there before he died shortly after nine the same morning.

Mr. Janssen was beloved by all. His sweet disposition and noble character and Christian faith won him many friends. For many years he was an office bearer of the Christian Reformed Church west of Wellsburg. He lost his parents when but a mere youth. For a while he made his stay at the home of his uncle, the late Rev. C. Bode. Later he moved to Grundy County, where he has resided many years. He is survived by his widow and the following children: Henry of Eldora, Anko of Kanawha, William, Claud, Ben and Mrs. Elizabeth Riant of this county and Mrs. Helen Swartz of Bellevue. He was nearly 59 years old.

Interment will be held Tuesday at the Christian Reformed Church near Wellsburg, preceded by services in said church. Rev. H. C. Bode, assisted by Rev. W. Bode, officiating.

In his death we are deprived of one of our best citizens and one of our beloved Christians. His memory shall be dear and his deeds will follow him, since he died as he lived, with faith in his Redeemer.
