Gene Blythe, 68, of Wellsburg, passed away on Sunday, March 21, 1999, at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames of cancer.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 24, at 1:30 p.m. at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Dave Lutterman, Dan Blythe, Toby Huisman, Lavern Van Heiden, Vaugh Blythe and Mike Meester. Honorary pallbearers were Walter Block, Jim Albers, Richard Bockes and Kendall Vry. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Gene was born on February 17, 1931, in Marshalltown the son of George and Grace (Ruter) Blythe. He graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1949. He served in the National Guard for seven years. On May 24, 1952, he was united in marriage to Esther Gauch in State Center. Gene founded Mid Equipment Manufacturing in 1963 which he operated until 1976. Gene and Esther wintered in Bonita Springs, FL, for the last 10 years. He served on the Board of Directors for the Sea Isles Condominiums in Bonita Springs and was past mayor and city councilman of Wellsburg. Gene enjoyed excavating and mowing his tenants' ditches and waterways.

He was preceded in death by his father, George in 1977; infant son, Larry; and two brothers, Kenneth and Alvin Blythe.

Survivors include his wife, Esther of Wellsburg; daughter, Sandy Weaver and husband Dan of Kansas City, MO; son, Gary Blythe and wife Julie of Sheldon; four grandchildren, Nick Weaver, Lara, Krista and Curtis Blythe; mother, Grace Blythe of Wellsburg; two brothers, Ernest Blythe and wife Berniece of Grundy Center and Wayne Blythe and wife Joyce of Wellsburg; two sisters, Mary Vry and husband Dale of Parkersburg and Ila Venenga of Bristow; two sisters-in-law, Donna Blythe of Wellsburg and Ann Blythe of Ormond Beach, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of the arrangements.
