Ella I. Bakker, 99, formerly of rural Grundy county, died Monday, October 26th, 2009 at The Western Home, Windhaven in Cedar Falls, IA. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 31st 10:30 A.M. at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center with Pastors Tom and Jean Bower officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 30th from 4 to 7 P.M. at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Interment will take place at the Colfax Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Holland. Memorials may be directed to the Bethany Presbyterian Church.

Ella was born in rural Grundy county on October 13, 1910, the first child of Philip and Reka Tack. Ella attended country school in Grundy county. She later met and married Wilbur Bakker and the two were united in marriage on February 5, 1930 at her parent’s home, beginning their marriage and building their farm place in a cornfield one mile north of Grundy Center. Wilbur died in 1988. During their marriage they traveled to all 50 states. They spent 17 winters in Mesa, Arizona.

Ella was a 76 year member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, at the time of her death being the oldest member. She had been an active member of Martha Circle, the United Presbyterian Women and for over 25 years taught a Sunday School class for 3 yr. olds. In 1962, she was named an Iowa Master Farm Homemaker. She was a member of the Palermo Women’s Club. She enjoyed flowers, gardening & grafting fruit trees. She was a well-known area seamstress, having sewn many wedding dresses. She was sewing, crocheting and reading until the time of her 99th birthday.

Ella is survived by daughters Norma (Lloyd) Hager of LaPorte City and Sharon (Luman) Colton of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Wilbur; son Donavon and infant twin daughter Shirley Rose; sisters Annette and Lorraine and a brother Marvin.
