Earl Merritt Died Tuesday Morning
Earl Merritt died at 3:15 Tuesday morning at his home in Grundy Center. He had been in failing health the past seven years. Advanced age and complications was the cause of his death. He was 88 years old last March. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Thursday afternoon at the Baptist Church in Grundy Center. The services will be conducted by Rev. Paul Heiniger. Burial will be in the Grundy Center Cemetery.
Resided in Grundy County 76 years. Mr. Merritt was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Merritt. He was born in Cherry Creek, New York, March 11, 1869. At the age of 12 years he came with his parents to Grundy County. That was 76 years ago. He resided here continually ever since. The Merritt family located on a farm three miles northwest of Grundy Center and that farm has been in the family name ever since.
Married 55 years ago. Earl Merritt and Mable Dixon were married at Iowa Falls, October 3, 1902. They began housekeeping following their marriage on a farm 3.5 miles northwest of Grundy Center. They made their home on that farm until seven years ago when they moved to Grundy Center. They retired from the farm when his health began to fail. Their son Wilbur and his family reside on the farm.
Mr. and Mrs. Merritt observed their 50th wedding anniversary on October 30th, five years ago. Mr. Merritt had been an active member of the Baptist Church in Grundy Center for many years and as long as his health permitted.
Surviving are his widow, son Wilbur and one grandchild Morris. Other surviving members of his family are two brothers and two sisters. The brothers are Arthur Allnatt Merritt, Grundy Center, and Melvin Leroy Merritt, of Portland, Oregon. The sisters are Mrs. Alice Parks Miller, Fort Rock, Oregon and Miss Mertie Merritt, of Grundy Center.
