A Century's Growth of the Lindaman Family Tree

Below is given a family history of the Lindaman family covering a period of 106 years. The family of two of 1820 have grown to a colony of more than two hundred within the period of a century.

Berend Lindaman was born in Loquard, Germany, on May 8, 1820. Martha Hanson was born in Rysum, Germany, on Feb. 25th, 1825. They were united in matrimony in 1849. To this happy union were born six sons: John, Henricus, Jacob, Henry, William and Ben. Four of these were born in Germany and two in Illinois. The family departed from Germany in the year 1862 taking passage in a sailing ship and the voyage across the ocean lasted six weeks. As emigrants they first settled down in Illinois near Forreston in Ogle county. Five years later they moved to Iowa and first settled down on the place known as the old Wm. Lindaman farm about three-fourths of a mile south and east of the church known as the Dekker church. About two years later they moved to the old original Berend Lindaman farm, now owned by the youngest son, B. B. Lindaman. This part of the country was all prairie at that time, with only a few houses widely scattered. They lived on this farm until all the sons were married, when they moved to a house on the H. B. Lindaman eighty about one mile west where they spent the evening of their life. Mother Lindaman died on the 9th day of June, 1898, at the age of 73 years, 3 months and 14 days. Father Lindaman spent the remaining years of his life at the old home farm, under the loving care of the B. B. Lindaman family and died on April 25th, 1911, at the age of ninety-one years, eleven months and seventeen days.

John Lindaman, the oldest son, was born in Germany Oct. 13, 1850. Henricus, the second son, was born in Germany on Sept. 21, 1853. Jacob was born in Germany on June 15, 1856, and died on Feb. 9, 1918, on the same farm where his parents had first settled when coming to Iowa, at the age of 61 years, 7 months and 24 days. The fourth son, Henry, was born in Germany on June 11, 1859. William, the fifth son, was born in Ogle county, Ill., Feb. 25, 1863. Ben, the youngest son, was born in Ogle county, Ill., on July 19, 1867.

The oldest son, John, was married to Fannie Riekens in 1871 and this union was blessed with 8 children, 7 sons and 1 daughter: Ben, Dick, Martin, Richard, Martha, John, Frank and Fred. Ben, the oldest son of John Lindaman, married Tillie VanGerpen and this union is blessed with 5 living children. Dick, the second son, married Mary Ludeman and to this union were born 8 children. Martin, the third son, married Carrie Kramer and this union was blessed with 5 living children. Richard, the fourth son, was married to Tillie Hickman and they were blessed with 4 children. John, the oldest son of Richard Lindaman, married Ina Cobie and to this union was born one child, being the only great-great-grandchild. Martha, the only daughter, married Wm. Dreyer and they are the parents of 2 living children. John, the fifth-son, was married to Tena Huisenga and this union was blessed with 5 living children. Frank, the sixth son, was married to Clara Koester and to this union were born 3 children. Fred, the youngest son, married Grace Niehuis and they are the parents of 2 children.

The second son of Berend Lindaman, Henricus, married Talea Schutjer in 1876 and to this union were born 12 children, 6 sons and 6 daughters. One son died in infancy and one daughter, Fannie, died when about 28 years old. Ben, the oldest son of Henricus Lindaman, married Anna DeVries and to them were born 2 children. George, the second son, married Lena Meyer and this union is blessed with 4 children. Martha, the oldest daughter, married Dick Riekens and to this union were born 4 children. Ella, the second daughter, married Jerry Spieker and to this union were born 3 children. John, the third son, married Lilly Fricken and they are the parents of two children. Fannie, the third daughter, married Robt Niebreugge. This union was broken by Fannie's death in 1918. Jake, the fourth son, married Amelia Rixmann and to this union were born 2 children. Tillie, the fourth daughter, married John Gronevelt and to this union were born two children. Reka, the fifth daughter, married J. C. E. Neibreugge and this union was blessed with 4 children. Hannah, the sixth daughter, married Fred Peters and to this union were born 2 children. William, the youngest son, married Ida Riebkes and they are the parents of one child.

The third son of Berend Lindaman, Jacob, was married to Kate Greenfield in 1881 and to this union were born 12 children, seven sons and five daughters. One son died in infancy and one son when about two years old. The ten surviving children are: Annie, the oldest daughter, married Menno Buskohl and to this union were born four children. Ben, the oldest son is single and at home. Martha, the second daughter, married Henry Akkerman who died in 1918. To this union was born one son. Lena, the third daughter, married Riebke VanLoh and to this union was born one child. Heye, the second son, married Hilda Tjabring and this union was blessed with one child. John, the third son, married May Finger and to this union were born two children. Henry, the fourth son, married Florence Ertmoed. Katie, the fourth daughter, married Louis VanLoh. Jake, the fifth son, is single and at home. Nannie, the fifth daughter, married Peter Klingenborg and this union is blessed with one child. William, the youngest son, is single and at home.

Henry, the fourth son of Berend Lindaman, married Elisabeth Johnson in 1884 and to this union were born 12 children, 2 sons and 10 daughters. One son and three daughters died in infancy. Martha, the oldest daughter, married Fred Speiker and to this union were born nine children. Etta, the second daughter, married Richard Tack and this union is blessed with five children. Lizzie, the third daughter, married George Tjaden and to this union were born four children. Jennie, the fourth daughter, married Meinard Niehaus and this union is blessed with with one child. Bena, the fifth daughter, married Ben Reemsma and to this union was born one child. Henry, the only son, married Grace Austin. Ann and Fannie, the two youngest daughters, are single.

William, the fifth son of Berend Lindaman, was married to Rina DeVries in 1888 and this union was blessed with 8 children, 5 sons and 3 daughters. One son died when about one year old. Ben W., the oldest son, married Lillian Hammerhead and to this union were born three children. Henry, the second son, married Dena Oelman and they are the parents of two children. John, the third son, married Margarette Beving and this union is blessed with two children. Grace, the oldest daughter, married Fritz Frerichs. Mabel and Dena, daughters, and William, the youngest son, are still at home.

Ben B., the youngest son of Berend Lindaman, was married to Nannie Gronevelt in 1893.
