Hugh Weatherman (army serial No. 124281), private, Battery C 5th Field Artillery. For extraordinary heroism in action at Mandres, France, March 1, 1918. During a heavy enemy bombardment of gas and high explosive shells, Pvt. Weatherman left shelter for the purpose of putting gas masks on his horses, and while so doing was mortally wounded by a shell fragment. Realizing the character of his wound, he refused medical attention, urging the Medical Corps men to assist other wounded men who could be saved.Emergency address: Winfield Weatherman, father, Beaman, Iowa
