H. E. Slifer

Mr. Slifer was born in Washington county, Maryland, August 13, 1842. He is now 82 years old. His father rode on horseback from Maryland to Carroll county, Illinois, near Mount Carroll, to see the country. He liked the country so well that when he went back to Maryland he made up a train of five families and came to Illinois, settling near Mount Carroll. Mr. H. E. Slifer lived there until he moved to Iowa in the year 1866 and landed in Iowa March 15, 1866, and settled in Melrose township.
