He was born in Waupun, Wis., January 10, 1854, and is a son of Edwin Hillyer, a business man of that place. In his native town he spent the days of his boyhood and youth, being reared to manhood in his parents’ home. His education was acquired in the schools of Ripon and Madison, Wis. Taking up the study of law, he was graduated from the law department of Wisconsin State University in the Class of ’80. Immediately afterward he came to Iowa, locating in Grundy Centre, where he began the practice of the legal profession. The following year he purchased a set of abstract books from S. R. Raymond and E. H. Beckman. These books are now in perfect shape.

In the year 1882 Mr. Hillyer was married in his native town, the lady of his choice being Miss Phila M. Johnson, who was also born in Waupun, Wis. The young couple hold an enviable position in social circles, and have many warm friends throughout this community.

In his political views Mr. Hillyer is a Republican, having been identified with that party since attaining his majority. He has never been a politician in the sense of office seeking, yet he was elected and served for one term as Mayor of the city, proving a capable and efficient officer. He is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of which he is Past Grand, and he also belongs to the Masonic fraternity. In religious belief he is a Congregationalist, holding membership with the church at Grundy Centre.
