CHARLES CRANE. One of the most finely located farms in Pleasant Valley Township, Grundy County, is owned and occupied by Charles Crane, whose reputation as an agriculturist is only excelled by his character as a man. The estate consists of two hundred and forty acres, on which may be seen a substantial residence and numerous buildings adapted to the needs of a prosperous and enterprising farmer.
The birth of our subject occurred in Niagara Falls, N. Y., August 14, 1839. His parents, Joseph and Emily (Buckley) Crane, were also natives of the Empire State, and reared a family of three children, those besides our subject being Maria and George. The father, who was a farmer by occupation, departed this life in New York, when thirty years of age. His good wife, who survived him many years, died in 1851.
On account of his father’s death, when five years of age, our subject was taken into the home of Nelson Allen, in Illinois, with whom he remained until reaching his thirtieth year. Three years later Mr. Crane was married to Miss Mary Vestle, who was born and reared in Illinois. To them were born four children, viz.: Edith, George, Floyd and Fannie E. They have all been given fine educations. Mrs. Crane was born in Knox County, Ill., and was a daughter of David Vestle. She is a most highly respected lady, and keeps informed on all topics of general and local interest.
When coming to Iowa in 1872, our subject, purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land, to which he has since added, and now owns an estate numbering two hundred and forty acres. A man of strict integrity and generosity of opinion, Mr. Crane naturally wins friends easily, and is respected throughout the entire county. Although he has frequent opportunities to fill public offices, he is so engrossed with his farming interests that he has no time for accepting political honors. He always casts his ballot for Republican candidates, and in religious matters is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
