Hosea Ballow Howard was born in Eric county, Pennsylvania, on October 4, 1843, and passed away at the home of his son, F.A. Howard in Ames, Iowa, on August 23, 1934.
His boyhood days were spent in Clayton county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood and was united in marriage to Eliza M. Hill on March 26, 1866. They made their home in Elkader, Clayton County, Iowa, until the year of 1892, when they moved to Churdan, Iowa, where they lived until the death of his wife who passed away on April 17, 1927. Since that time he has been making his home with his children in Fort Dodge, Ames, Jefferson and Churdan.
Had Mr. Howard lived until October 4th he would have been 91 years old. He was the father of eleven children, nine of whom survive him, namely James N. of Ventura, California; Elza F. of Phoenix, Arizona; Freedman J. of Jefferson; Jacob C. of Three Rivers, Texas; Cora B. Howard of Fort Dodge; Frederick A. of Ames, and Elmer C. of Corina, California.
His wife and two sons, William E. and Henry C., preceded him in death. Besides his children he leaves thirty grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.
Mr. Howard was one of a family of six children. His parents, Jacob and Rena Howard, moved from Erie, Pennsylvania, to Clayton county, Iowa, when he was a small child. His parents, brothers and sisters have passed on.
Mr. Howard was an indulgent husband and father, with a beautiful Christian character, a loving friend and neighbor.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Churdan Methodist church in charge of the pastor, Rev. H.M. Strong. Two songs were sung by Mrs. Wes Pollock, Mrs. H.W. Reading, Ray Mattison and Mr. Clark; also a solo by Mrs. F.E. Cressler, accompanied by Miss Helen Rogers. The casket bearers were grandsons. Burial was made in the Highland cemetery.
