Melva Byerly
(Died January 9, 2009)

Melva Lavern Byerly, age 81, of Scranton, Iowa, passed away on Friday, January 9, 2009 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Born on August 20, 1927 at Lake City, Iowa, she was the daughter of Edward and Nellie (Hane) Corneilson. She grew up in Sumner, Iowa, and her family moved to Scranton her senior year in high school. She graduated from Scranton Consolidated School in 1945. She was married to Wayne Robert Byerly on November 23, 1946 at Jefferson, Iowa. She ran a café in Scranton with her mother for many years and she was a cook at the Scranton High School for 30 years. Melva was a member of the United Methodist Church in Scranton and had taught Sunday school at the Lutheran Church in Scranton until it closed. Surviving are a daughter Patti Anderson and her fiancé Kevin Allender of Bagley, Iowa; a son George Byerly; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three sisters: Dorothy Try of Pittsburg, California, Edna Coughenower and her husband Marion of Altoona, Iowa, and Faye Campbell and her husband Rex of San Jacinto, California.

Melva was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1992, and a grandson Josh Byerly in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Scranton with Rev. Thompson officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton from 5 – 7 P.M. on Tuesday. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Wednesday to lie in state until the time of service. Casket bearers will be Dale Stephens, Bill Slocum, Bob Seaman, George Hedges, Orvie Umbaugh, and Doug Carmen. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery. ~ The Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home, Scranton, IA 9 Jan 2009.
