Aug 8, 1945 - Carroll Times Herald - Last rites were held at the Friends church at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon for John Sellers, well-known Scranton
farmer, who died at his home southeast of town Aug. 4 after being in poor health for some time. The Rev. Mr. Morris, pastor of the church, and the Rev. J. Rasmussen, pastor of the Lutheran church, officiated. Lucille Rutan, pianist, accompanied Mrs. E.T. Christensen and Fred Newendorf of Jefferson who sang "Saved by Grace". The Rev. Mr. Rasmussen sang "I Come to the End of the Way", accompanied by Mrs. Rasmussen.

Burial was in the Scranton cemetery under the direction of the Huffman Funeral home. Pallbearers were Bennie Oxenford, Paul Whitver, John Stroud, Luther Huffman, Phil Olmstead and Forrest Gibson.

Mr. Sellers was born near Churchville, Va., son of Margaret Bell and Jerome H.B. Sellers, January 13, 1869, the ninth child in a family of 11 — five brothers and eight sisters. One brother, George of Churchville, Va, and four sisters, Mrs. W.H. Tewalt, Mrs. Mattie Lightner, Mrs. Fred Scantling, and Miss Nannie Sellers, are the surviving members of this large family.

At the age of 21 Mr. Sellers came to Youngstown, Ohio. In 1894 he, with his brothers, Howard and Will, moved to Winterset, Ia., where they made their home. There he met Gertrude Lovell, whom he married Feb. 7, 1901. They came to Greene county and established their home on a farm near Jefferson, later moving near Scranton and since that time have made their home in or near the town of Scranton.

To this union were born two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Whitver of Scranton and Mrs. Marguerite Maahs of Whittemore, Ia., who, with their mother survive.

At the age of 17, Mr. Sellers was converted and joined the Presbyterian church in Churchville, Va. His membership remained there until he and his family became members of the Scranton Monthly Meeting of Friends in 1915. He was active in church work.
