"JOHN J. VanNESS". --John Junior VanNess was born at Sidney, June 13, 1867, and died May 25, 1928, being at the time of his decease, 60 years, 11 months and 12 days old. He grew to manhood's estate in this commnity, attending what was then called district schools at Eastpoint, Greenbush and Lone Willow. At an early adult age he went to Nebraska and located on a farm near Surprise, at which place he remained for several years.

He was never married and his life, narrowed perhaps by the absence of the blessings which are associated with a home and family, found expression in the freedom of travel over a large number of the states. During the world war he was placed in charge of a government shipload of cattle assigned to Cuba.

The latter years of his life were spent on a ranch near Glasgow, Montana. In January of the present year he entered a hospital in Omaha where he underwent operations for cancerous tumors, and was confined in the hospital there for three months. Returning to Glasgow the first of April, and expecting to resume work as he became able, he again entered the hospital for another operation. Surviving this, but greatly weakened,he was brought to the hospital at Blair on May 23, and two days later died. Four operations within six months and the nature of this affliction were too great, and death was not to be longer denied.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Rachel VanNess of Sidney, and seven brothers and sisters: W. G. VanNess, Oklahoma City; J. H. VanNess, David City, Nebraska; Mrs. U.S. Reeves, Blair, Nebraska; A. A. VanNess, Sidney; Mrs. John Simmerman, Broken Bow, Nebraska; Mary VanNess, Sidney; Mrs. J. F. Racobs, Sidney.
Funeral services were conducted from the home of Mrs. Rachel VanNess Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Miles of the Presbyterian church officiating. Interment in the Sidney cemetery.
