Fri, May 20, 1927After weeks of sickness in which he grew weaker and weaker, taps were sounded for Henry Clayton early Wednesday morning, and another Civil War veteran and early settler has gone on to his reward. Up until the last few years, when age showed its marks, he was very active in the affairs of the town and community, and could always be depended upon to help in any cause which was for the betterment of the community.
Henry Harrison Clayton was born at Farmland, Indiana, February 3, 1849, and died at his home in Hamburg, May 11, 1927, aged 78 years, 3 months and 8 days.
At the age of nine years old he moved with his parents to Linden, Mo., where he lived for a number of years and then to a farm southeast of Hamburg. While living in Atchison County he served one term as county collector, When fifteen years of age he joined Company I, 43rd Regiment of the Missouri Volunteers and served until June, 1865.
He was married to Louisa Spellerburg in 1867 and she passed away March 15, 1908. To this union were born nine children, five having preceded him in death, namely; Will, Temple, Mary Jane, Jake and Ruth.
Mr. Clayton was a member of the I. O. O. F. and Masonic Lodges and the G. A. R. On December 23, 1912, he was married to Hattie Harrington.
He took a great delight in being with young people, and was a source of encouragement to many a young man who was just getting a start in life. the community has suffered a distinct loss in his departure, but he will live on in the thoughts of his family and the many friends he made.
He leaves to mourn his departure his loving wife, two brothers, Robert and Charles of Hamburg, one sister, Mrs. Mary Morrow of Los Angeles, and four sons, Bert, Charles, Beryl and Chalmers, and eleven grandchildren, besides a host of friends.
Funeral services at the M. E. Church Friday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by the Rev. S. R. Overhoiser, and interment in the Hamburg Cemetery.
