Chaney, son of John and Martha Chaney, was born December 28, 1846, in Harrison County, Ohio, and died at the home of his son, Joseph, in Riverton, IA., October 26, 1928, at the age of 81 years. He was one of a family of twelve children. He came with his parents to Fremont County, Iowa, in 1854 and had lived in this community ever since.
At the age of 16 he enlisted for the Civil War and was in the army two years and nine months. He was united in marriage to Nancy Cordelia Allison, September 22, 1867. To them were born nine children, Arthur, who resides in Geneva, Neb.; John A., of Mason City, Neb.; Mrs. Nora Brown, of O'Neill, Neb.: Hiram Chester, of Riverton, Ia.:Mrs. Cordelia Miller, of Hamburg, Ia.; Jessie L. and Joseph A., of Riverton, and Mrs. Gladys Boyd of Superior, Neb.; one daughter, Mrs. Lillian Hannon, died in 1925, and Mrs. Chaney died September 8, 1924.
Mr. Chaney grew up with this part of Iowa and knew something of the hardships and difficulties with which the pioneer had to contend.
He leaves five sons and three daughters, one brother, S. P. Chaney of Farragut, Ia., and one sister, Mrs. Mattie Byers of Sidney, Ia.; twenty-two grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church conducted by Rev. H. P. Gringer, assisted by Rev. W. E. Harvey. Music was furnished by Mrs. W. E. Stubbs, Mrs. and Mrs. Earl Cowden and Dr. B. H. Brooks with Mrs. L. A. Baldwin at the piano. The pallbearers Leslie Johnson, Ed Shearer, Charles Ryan, William Stubbs, Fritz Neihart. Otto O'Bladden of Riverton Legion Post, Hamburg Legion Post had charge of ceremonies at the grave and officiated with firing squad and bugles. Burial was made in the Riverton Cemetery.
