O.H. COFFEY, 98, DIED SATURDAY

Oliver Hill Coffey, Hamburg’s oldest citizen, who had resided in Fremont County sixty-nine years, passed away at his home in south Hamburg early Saturday morning Nov. 25, at the age of 98 years, 11 months and 15 days. While bedfast only three weeks, he had been in failing health for the past four months and had home intense suffering prayerfully and patiently. He was devoted husband and father, and neighbor who could always be counted on in times of need.

His life work had been farming and gardening and he was an expert at that until about five years ago, when failing health made it necessary to give up work. He was a member of the Methodist church and read his bible continuously until his sight failed; then he received spiritual inspiration from prayer and the sacred radio programs.

Mr. Coffey was born in Jamestown, Garrison County, Kentucky, Dec. 11, 1851. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Tiller on Feb. 1, 1874. They raised a family of eight, four sons and four daughters. The Coffey’s came to Fremont County in 1881 and he resided here since that time, forty-six years in his present home. Mrs. Coffey passed Jan. 15, 1942 after nearly sixty-nine years of wedded life. The eldest child Edward, died June 7, 1927 and Thomas as the youngest, in military service, Oct. 16, 1916.

Mr. Coffey is survived by his son Judson of Bender, Sask., Canada, Boyce of Hamburg, and his daughter, Mrs. Mollie Catlett of San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Hattie Clayton, Mrs. Emma Honts and Mrs. Nell Notson of Hamburg, eighteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends who will miss this good man, who was a pioneer of this community.

Services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday, Nov. 28, conducted by the Rev. Cecil C. Latta. Burial was in the Mt. Olive Cemetery.
