PAGE COUNTY, IOWA, MARRIAGE LICENSES: John M. Phipps married Mary Long:

Their daughter Laura B., 32, of Farragut, born in Jefferson county, Kansas; married Amos Bell, 27, born in Clay county, Missouri now a farmer at Farragut, son of T. B. Bell and Mandy Barker; married on March 8, 1897 at Clarinda.

N.B.: I think that John Phipps was the person whom the well-known Ida Tarbell believed to be the father of John D. Rockefeller, the oil baron. About 1910, she wrote an article in her magazine saying that the father probably lived in southwestern Iowa, at a very advanced age, under the alias of "John Phipps". I remember it being said that "Ida Tarbell rang the doorbells" in Fremont county in the course of her investigations.--W.F.
