MURDER NEAR RIVERTON
A telegram sent from Sidney, Fremont County, dated May 6, says:
A keg of beer and a game of cards were the provoking elements that assisted in bringing about the murder of George Scott, by Oscar Cloud, last night at a bridge two miles west of Riverton in this county.
Spangler & Wilson, bridge contractors, were there with a crew of men repairing a bridge and were quartered in a tent. Scott and Cloud, both middle aged men and employees, were playing a game of cards when a dispute arose over a dropped card or some such trivial affair connected with the game, and in the dispute, Scott reached over the table presumably to strike Cloud, when the latter drew a revolver and shot Scott, killing him instantly,
The ball entered near the mouth. The shooting was done in the heat of passion, and when the full realization of what he had done came to Cloud, he came to Sidney, requesting Spangler to accompany him, and gave himself up to the Sheriff. There were some ten to twelve men present, but whether they witnessed the transaction or not is not known. Fortunately, neither of the men have families.
