Jacob Pauley was born June 3, 1915 in Brevier, Germany. He was a blacksmith by trade, beginning work at 16. He got his education in Germany and when he became of age to be drafted in the German Army, he and his friend Bruce Loveland, both drew the number 0, which meant they were free, and would not be required to serve.

They both came to America in 1937 in a sailboat. Family writings indicate they were 62 days crossing the ocean. He went to Fort Plain, Montgomery Co., N.Y. and lived there until 1839 when he came to Iowa. (Iowa was Missouri at that time and later became Fremont County Iowa.) He bought land from the government for $1.25 an acre, 4 1/2 miles north and east of Hamburg. This country was all timber then and the closest town was St. Joseph, MO.

He farmed this location the remainder of his life. He enlisted Aug 1863 in Company A, 8th Iowa Cavalry as a blacksmith. He was in the battles of Nashville and Franklin. He was discharged August 24, 1865.

He married Mary E. Tinker (a schoolteacher) November 8, 1842. They had 11 children, five of which died in infancy. This is one of the earliest marriages and happened before Fremont County became a political entity. There is no record of it in county books. He died March 30, 1888. He is buried at Mt. Zion-Utterback Cemetery in Fremont, County, Iowa.
