Ellen Brown was born in County Donegal, Ireland, September 12, 1854 and passed to her reward December 18, 1915, aged 61 years, 3 months and 6 days.
She came to America at the age of seventeen, arriving June 16th and was united in marriage to John Maxwell the next day, June 17, 1872, at Zenia, Ohio, by Rev. Bedell, a Baptist clergyman.
They came to Iowa, locating on their farm in Scott Township, one mile east of Dougherty, Iowa where she continued to reside. Mr. Maxwell preceding her to the other world nearly seven years ago.
To this union were born seven children; Anna J; Mrs Julius Cutler, deceased 1894, Susie S., Mrs Nelson of Rockwell, Iowa; James who died in 1892; Jennie, Mrs. Culter of Farimont, Minn.; a little child dying in infancy, Samuel W. and John Arthur.
Mrs Maxwell united with the Coldwater M. E. Church in 1894 and she has always been able to testify, that " The Lord is My Shepard." Even her dying was eased with the comforting words of the Palmest-"Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me."
Her loss is mourned by four surviving children, ten grandchildren, one sister, Mrs Susan Morrow of Ireland, one brother John Crawford Brown who has made his home with her.
The entire neighboring community will miss her spirit of love and helpfulness manifested so many times during the forty years which she lived among them.
Funeral Services were conducted at the Coldwater Baptist Church, December 20th by the pastor, L. W. Inman and interment was made at West Fork Cemetery.
