Gary Mark Willems, age 64, of Ackley, died on Saturday, September 16, 2017, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines after a short but mightily-fought battle with lung cancer. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 23, at St. John's U.C.C. in Ackley. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, September 22, at St. John's U.C.C. in Ackley, and also one hour before services on Saturday. The Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley is assisting the family with arrangements.
Gary Willems was born on April 21, 1953, in Grundy Center, Iowa, to Robert and Thelma (Huisman) Willems. He graduated from Ackley-Geneva High School in 1971 and graduated from Hawkeye Tech in 1973. On September 5, 1975, Gary was united in marriage to Sandra Glaze. They lived on the Willems farm, were married for 15 years, and had three daughters, Jennifer (Willems) DeWall, Kimberley (Willems) Mears, and Sara (Willems) Bushur. They later divorced and Gary married Teresa Muller in 1996. This marriage allowed Gary to gain a wonderful son, Trever Willems, who he soon adopted. Gary loved to work hard and provide for his family. He had a true love for mankind and was friendly and helpful to everyone. He was a passionate and very successful gardener. He was a simple man who loved the outdoors, his animals and being at home on the Willems farm. He was a farmer, mechanic, business owner, and a rural mail carrier. He was a member of the St. John's U.C.C. and the men's golf league at the Ackley Recreation Club.
Gary is survived by his wife, Teresa; daughters, Jennifer (Matthew) DeWall and their children, Samantha and Jase of Van Meter; Kimberly (Johnny) Mears and their children, Caitlyn, Carson, and Landon of Adel; and Sara (Tom) Bushur and their children, Makenzie and Scarlett of San Antonio, Texas; a son, Trever (Denise) Willems and their children, Kylie, Collin, and Blake of Ackley; and a step-son, Christian (Kelli) Crelly and their children, Logan and Ivy of Wilmington, N.C.; his mother, Thelma Willems of Ackley; two sisters, Jolene (Bill) Ibeling and Joyce (Randy) Roegner, both of Ackley; brother-in-law Steve Muller of St. Ann, M.O. brother-in-law, David (Jan) Muller of Camdenton, M.O.; and sister-in-law Jolene (Kevin) Pieters of Steamboat Rock; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Willems, and a brother, Stephen Willems.
