Dubuque Telegraph Herald – November 4, 1931

John P. Cooney, a former resident of Dubuque, died suddenly Tuesday night at Berwin, a suburb of Chicago, where he resided for several years.

Mr. Cooney left Dubuque about twelve years ago. He was, at one time, a justice of the peace here. A brother-in-law, John Alderson, received a wire telling of his death. The body will be taken to Ackley, Iowa, for burial. It will pass through Dubuque, arriving here on the Illinois Central at 6 o’clock Friday morning and leaving here at 6:15.

Mr. Cooney is survived by his widow and one son, J. J. Cooney. Another son died about ten years ago.

DIED AT BERWIN, ILL.

John Cooney Was a Brother of James and Miss Maggie Cooney

Relatives in Ackley received intelligence of the death of John Cooney, resident of Berwin, a suburb of Chicago. He was a brother of James and Miss Maggie Cooney of this city, and Dan Cooney of Mitchell, S. Dak., recently deceased. He was well along in the 80’s and made his home with his son, John J. and visited Ackley a year ago. His death occurred on the same date as his brother’s a year ago. His wife is still living at Berwin. Originally there were eight brothers and one sister; all are dead, he was the last of the family.

His remains are to be brought to Ackley for burial; funeral services will be conducted at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Friday forenoon.
