SHEFFIELD - Phyllis Levitt, 81, of Sheffield, died Friday (March 31, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 3, at Zion St. John Lutheran Church in Sheffield with the Rev. Kent Mechler officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Phyllis Elaine Emhoff was born Aug. 3, 1924, in Sheffield, the daughter of Clinton Sr. and Anna (Kruckenberg) Emhoff. She was raised on a farm three-and-one-half miles west of Sheffield. She attended country schools until high school. She graduated from Sheffield High School in 1941, where she enjoyed playing basketball. After graduating from Upper Iowa University, Fayette, she taught school in Rudd and then at Manly, along with coaching girls' basketball. She was also a substitute teacher in Sheffield for many years. Her last jobs were working for North Iowa Area Community College as a teacher evaluator and at the Sheffield Care Center as an activities coordinator.

Phyllis was united in marriage to Rex Levitt on April 29, 1944, in the Lutheran parsonage, Sheffield, by Pastor Reuther. They made their home in Sheffield after Rex returned from military service.

Phyllis was a charter member of the Tri-S club. She enjoyed working in various church organizations at Zion St John, teaching Sunday school and Bible school. She was a member of the church council, president of the Ladies Aid, and volunteered for other duties as the need arose. She enjoyed playing cards, making ceramics, doing crossword puzzles, crocheting, traveling, talking to her friends on the phone and most of all, being Grandma.

Phyllis is survived by one son, David (Sue) Levitt, Sheffield; one daughter, Beverly (John) Loken, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; one brother-in-law, Mernie Kaasa, of Hanlontown; three grandchildren: Lisa (Mark) Symens, Todd (Angela) Loken and Jennifer (Joe) Niedert; and four great-grandchildren: Michael Symens, Zachary Symens, Claire Loken and Kira Niedert.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Rex; her parents; and one brother, Clinton Emhoff Jr.
