Funeral services for Fred Martin were held Wednesday, November 6, 1985 at 1:30 p.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Terrance Hennesy officiated. The Schutte Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Frederick "Fred" Louis Martin, son of Jay Emmett and Carrie Marie (Frederick) Martin, was born June 19, 1914 in Elkhart, Iowa. He died Sunday, November 3, 1985 at Community Memorial Hospital in Postville.

Fred graduated from the Hampton, Iowa High School and attended the University of Iowa. He won letters in football and track in high school and won freshman letter sweaters in both football and track at the University of Iowa. As a sophomore he was a member of the 30 man football traveling squad and made the first trip to California where Iowa played U.C.L.A.

He began working on a newspaper when he was 12 years old and became Co-Publisher of the Postville Herald in Postville, Iowa in 1948. He retired in 1978 after 30 years at the Postville Herald.

On December 1, 1940 he was married to
Evelyn Wieser in Hampton, Iowa. They, along with Fred's mother, Carrie, moved from Hampton to Postville in May of 1948. In 1965 they built their present home on Front Street.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Robert and a sister Viva Lutz.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn, a brother, John of Coral Springs, Florida and 4 sisters; Louise (Mrs. Oscar Scherer) of Goldendale, WA., Vera (Mrs. Fritz Schreiber) of Sheffield, Iowa, Alta (Mrs. Truman Shelton) of Porterville, CA, and Adeline (Mrs. Jack Arnold) of Healdsburg, CA.

Fred was a member of the Commjunity Presbyterian Church, having served on the Board of Trustees and the Deacons. He was also a member of the American Bowling League Team and spent time playing golf and bridge.

Casket bearers were Paul Welzel, Donald Heins, Grant Schultz, Ray DeSotel, Robert Schultz, Paul Moser, Daryl Bachtell and Keith Brainard.
