BAILEY, Viola Henrietta 1908-2004

NORA SPRINGS, IOWA — Viola Henrietta Bailey, 95, of Nora Springs, died Sunday (May 9, 2004) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 101 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Ruth Hansen officiating. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye Ave. in Nora Springs, and one hour prior to service time on Friday at the church.

The family of Viola Henrietta Bailey has requested that memorial contributions be made to the St. Luke Lutheran Church or to Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.

Viola Henrietta Bailey was born on July 11, 1908, in Rock Falls, the daughter of John and Caroline (Wolert) Christiansen. She attended and received her education in the Rock Falls Community Schools, graduating from Rock Falls High School.

She was united in marriage to Gail Otto Bailey on April 11, 1929, in Mason City. He preceded her in death on July 17, 1977. After their marriage, they farmed in the Mason City, Nora Springs and Plymouth areas. Viola also worked as a sales clerk for Newberry 5 & Dime, Montgomery Ward, and also worked as a housekeeper for Mercy Hospital, all in Mason City.

She enjoyed crocheting, afghans, flowers, baking, cooking, and playing cards and games with her neighbors, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and friends. Viola loved her church and was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Nora Springs, and enjoyed quilting with her church group.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Carolynn Nicholson and her husband, Duane, of Baudette, Minn., John Bailey and his wife, Alice, of Tawas City, Mich., Norman Bailey and Pauline Peterson, of Nora Springs, and Connie Friedline and her husband, John, of Apex, N.C.; 18 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Luella Kaldenberg of Rock Falls, and two brothers, Leonard Christiansen of Mason City and Clarence Christiansen and his wife, Evelyn, of Mason City, as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Meta Peterson Christianson; two sisters, Minna Stupka and Elsie Tibbits, and three stepbrothers, Bill, Arnold and Arthur Peterson.
