Date of Death - February 14, 1919

Glenn S. Smith was born April 24, 1894 in Charles City, Iowa, the son of Charles S. & Dora Beck Smith. He enlisted in the United States Army at Camp Dodge on September 16, 1917.

He was taken ill with the measles when his company left for France and had to remain at camp. It was not until April 15, 1918 that he was placed in a new company and sailed for France. He was stationed in the post office at Tours until December 20, 1918 when he joined the Engineers to travel through Europe giving demostrations in gas warfare.

On February 14, 1919 Glenn Smith was killed in a motor truck accident near Recey-sur-Ource, France. At the request of the family, the body was laid to rest in the American Cemetery near Recey-sur-Ource on February 16, 1919. A memorial service was held at Riverside Cemetery, Charles City, Iowa with family & friends in attendance.

On February 14, 1922 the body was disinterred from that burial site, removed from the wooden box it had been interred in and placed in a casket. On August 12, 1922 Mr. Smith's body was buried in Plot D Row 06 Grave 23 in St. Mihiel American Cemetery at Thiaucourt, France.
