Roberta Butterfield, 83, of Charles City, Iowa, passed away Saturday, May 18, 2019 at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral service for Roberta Butterfield will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Bethany Alliance Church in Charles City with Pastor Coulter Page officiating. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday at Bethany Alliance Church.

Roberta Ann (Bradshaw) Butterfield was born in Cincinnati, Iowa, on July 28, 1935. She lived with her family in the small southern Iowa coal towns of Hilltown and Dean until her father accepted a job with John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa. Roberta completed high school at sixteen years old and then went to the Iowa State Teachers College (now known as the University of Northern Iowa), where she received her teaching degree. She became a second grade teacher in Waterloo, and soon after, met the love of her life, Dean Butterfield.

Dean and Roberta were married on August 15, 1959 at Hagerman Baptist Church and moved to Charles City, Iowa, where they both accepted teaching positions in the school district. She stayed at home while the children were young, but began substitute teaching as they grew older. Roberta was the bible school director for many years at the Bethany Alliance Church, as well as serving in many church and community clubs.

Everyone who knew Roberta and Dean could see their close connection. They seldom spent time apart and enjoyed meeting up with friends every Friday night at local sporting events. Roberta, also, enjoyed her daily “coffees” with neighbors and close friends.

Roberta treasured her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The grandchildren have fond memories of long stays with “Grandma Berta and Grandpa Dean,” in which they were allowed to choose the week’s events such as shopping, attending church tea parties, fossil hunting, and going on day trips to Waterloo. They remember losing board games to Grandma and her listening to them play their musical instruments.

Roberta is survived by her children: Bradley Butterfield (Joan) of Charles City, IA and Deanne Rogers (William) of Boise, ID; seven grandchildren: Alison Frerichs (Jesse), Rhiannon Funte (Jamie), Sara Butterfield, Cole Rogers (Karissa), Luke Rogers, Mark Rogers, and Dillon Rogers; seven great-grandchildren: James, Avery and new October baby (Alison), Elise and Jack (Cole), Juliette (Rhiannon), Regina (Dillon); and her siblings Betty Dye and Curtis Bradshaw.

Roberta is now reunited in heaven with Dean, and her parents Robert and Lois (Gradwell) Bradshaw.

Roberta had a giving heart and a talent for teaching children, and she used that talent to bring glory to God. Roberta was loved and will be missed by the people that knew her.
